The aurora borealis, the Northern Lights, are normally seen only from the furthest northern areas, but have been seen from much further afield this week because of a powerful solar storm.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has made a dramatic comeback by winning the Republican US presidential primary in South Carolina. The victory means three different candidates have won the first three contests in the state-by-state battle for the Republican presidential nomination to face Democratic President Barack Obama.

The cruise ship Costa Concordia lies grounded off the shore of the island of Giglio, Italy. The death toll stands at 6, with a further 16 people still missing.

Two behind bars

Two men, Gary Dobson and David Norris, have been convicted of the racist murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence, 18 years after the attack in south London. Stephen Lawrence was stabbed to death on April 22, 1993, by a murderous racist gang. Two of the members of the gang are now behind bars because of new advances in police forensic testing.
